Carlos A. Reyes

Carlos A. Reyes (“Charlie”, “Calin”, “Caliche”, his favorite “Tata”), 72, beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, departed this earthly life peacefully on August 16, 2020 surrounded by his family at his home in Kearns, Utah. Carlos was the eldest of seven children born to Alberto Santamaria & Blanca Elba Reyes on June 14, 1948, in Santa Tecla, El Salvador. His life was enriched when he met his eternal sweetheart Miriam Reyes (Mendez) at church, it was love at first sight, the two married on July 18, 1968. Carlos considered Miriam his best friend and confidant. He honored and respected Miriam and put her comfort, and needs above his own. His commitment to her was evident in the way he treated her. If you asked Carlos, his greatest accomplishment wasn’t his church callings or his career, it was being a father. Carlos’ ambition was to provide a comfortable life for his family. He leaves behind a legacy of courage, determination, charity and faith. As a teacher and a leader he provided assistance to those in need. Life was not always easy, but his trials built the character of the man everyone grew to love and admire. Carlos loved life. Carlos grew up in the city, but he loved spending his summers with his aunt Paula Navarro at her ranch in La Junta, La Libertad. Carlos vividly remembered with fondness and a bit of melancholy his childhood days when heavy rains unleashed flashfloods down the cobble-stone streets of his hometown of Santa Tecla. He remembered collecting rainwater in rain barrels that he used to shower. He held tender memories of the slingshot wars he had with the neighborhood kids. He recalled his younger brother Rafael always following him around and trying to emulate him. His grandfather Isidro Navarro had a lasting influence on Carlos. In spite of his parents’ limited resource and many obstacles, Carlos learned early in life the importance of receiving an education and achieved a high GPA, graduating with honors. He attended Liceo Marcelino Flamenco (Marcelino Flamenco Elementary), became an apprentice at La Imprenta Nacional de El Salvador (National Printing Office) San Salvador, to help his parents financially. With the encouragement and request of his grandpa Isidro he went back to school at the Instituto Tecnologico (Technical institute) and became an Electronics Technician. Carlos went back and finished evening High School at Jose Damian Villacorta while working as Alfa Comercial Sales Supervisor for the whole Western Region of El Salvador. He later attended the Universidad de El Salvador (University of El Salvador) and pursued a Bachelor’s Degree in Foreign Languages (1977-1980); unfortunately, this goal was interrupted by unrest brought on by the civil war forcing the family to leave El Salvador. Carlos loved his native country of El Salvador, but he was also so proud of his United States citizenship. Carlos was known for his love and knowledge of the gospel and his testimony of the Savior. Since he joined the church in 1967 he served in many callings, to include, Seminary and Institute teacher (El Salvador and Juarez, Mexico), branch president and counselor (El Salvador), bishop and counselor several times (El Salvador, West Valley, and Kearns, UT). He retired as a Job Coach Trainer with the Humanitarian Center for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he loved his role of helping others foster self-reliance, and caring for the poor and the needy. He found great satisfaction in helping members become economically and emotionally self-reliant. He loved those he worked with and built lasting friendships. Carlos touched so many lives with his infectious smile, and his wisdom. His spirit will live on through all our wonderful memories and through the eyes of those who loved him. Carlos is survived by his wife Miriam Reyes; their 4 children: Mario Mendez, Yanira Reyes, William (Angela) Reyes, and Roxana (Rolando) Daza; 17 grandchildren: Judon, Roxanne (Colby), Denisha, Kendra, Keennen (Erika), Nathan; Joashua (Katie), Willow, Dylan, Demian, Carlos, Samantha, Jacob; Ian, Daniel, Sebastian and Isabella; 6 great-grandchildren: Danity, Giuliano, Lina, Michael, Angelique and Yesenia; his brother Rafael (Cecilia) Santamaria, and sisters Nelly, Delmi and Dinora. Carlos is also survived by many in-laws, nieces, nephews, and other extended family members. Carlos is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Luis Alonso and his sister Rosa Miriam. Viewing and Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 25, 2020. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, attendance will be for family and by invitation only. EE.UU, a los 72 años de edad. Carlos, el mayor de los siete hijos de Alberto Santamaría y Blanca Elba Reyes, nació el 14 de junio de 1948 en Santa Tecla, El Salvador. Su vida se enriqueció cuando conoció a su eterna compañera Miriam Reyes (Méndez) en la iglesia, fue amor a primera vista, contrajeron matrimonio el 18 de julio de 1968. La vida no siempre fue fácil, pero sus experiencias formaron el carácter del hombre que todos llegaron a amar y admirar. Carlos amaba la vida. Carlos creció en la ciudad, pero le encantaba pasar los veranos con su tía Paula Navarro en su rancho en La Junta, La Libertad. Carlos evocaba vívidamente con cariño y un poco de melancolía los días de su niñez cuando las fuertes lluvias desataban inundaciones repentinas por las calles empedradas de su ciudad natal de Santa Tecla. Recordaba los días cuando solía bañarse con agua de lluvia que recolectaba en barriles. Tenía tiernos recuerdos de las guerras con hondas que tuvo con los niños del vecindario. Recordaba que su hermano menor, Rafael, siempre lo seguía y trataba de emularlo en todo aspecto. Su abuelo Isidro Navarro tuvo una influencia duradera en Carlos. A pesar de los recursos limitados de sus padres y los muchos obstáculos, Carlos aprendió a una temprana edad la importancia de recibir una educación y logró obtener una promedio general (GPA) alto, graduándose con honores. Asistió al Liceo Marcelino Flamenco, se convirtió en aprendiz en La Imprenta Nacional de El Salvador, San Salvador, para ayudar económicamente a sus padres. Con el apoyo y recomendación de su abuelo Isidro, regresó a la escuela en el Instituto Tecnológico y se convirtió en Técnico en Electrónica. Carlos regresó y terminó sus estudios de bachillerato nocturno en el Instituto José Damián Villacorta mientras se desempeñaba como Supervisor de Ventas de Alfa Comercial para toda la Región Occidental de El Salvador. Posteriormente asistió a la Universidad de El Salvador y realizó una Licenciatura en Idiomas (1977-1980); lamentablemente, su sueño fue interrumpido por los disturbios provocados por la guerra civil que obligaron a que la familia abandonara El Salvador. Carlos amaba su país natal de El Salvador, pero también estaba muy orgulloso de su ciudadanía estadounidense. Carlos era conocido por su amor y conocimiento del evangelio y su testimonio del Salvador. Desde que se unió a la iglesia en 1967, sirvió en muchos llamamientos, entre ellos, maestro de seminario e instituto (El Salvador y Juárez, México), presidente de rama y consejero (El Salvador), obispo y consejero varias veces (El Salvador, West Valley y Kearns, Utah, EE.UU.) Carlos se jubiló como Capacitador en Asesoría Laboral del Centro Humanitario de La Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días, donde le encantaba su labor de ayudar a otros a fomentar la autosuficiencia y cuidar de los pobres y necesitados. Encontró una gran satisfacción en ayudar a los miembros a ser autosuficientes económica y emocionalmente. Amaba a aquellos con quienes trabajaba y fomentó amistades duraderas. Carlos siempre tuvo una gran influencia en la vida de muchas personas al compartir su sonrisa contagiosa y su sabiduría. Su espíritu vivirá a través de todos nuestros maravillosos recuerdos y a través de los ojos de quienes lo aman. A Carlos le sobreviven su esposa Miriam Reyes; sus 4 hijos: Mario Méndez, Yanira Reyes, William (Angela) Reyes y Roxana (Rolando) Daza; 17 nietos: Judon, Roxanne (Colby), Denisha, Kendra, Keenen (Erika), Nathan; Joashua (Katie), Willow, Dylan, Demian, Carlos, Samantha, Jacob; Ian, Daniel, Sebastian e Isabella; y 6 bisnietos: Danity, Giuliano, Lina, Michael, Angelique y Yesenia; su hermano Rafael (Cecilia) Santamaría, y sus hermanas Nelly, Delmi y Dinora. A Carlos también le sobreviven muchos familiares políticos, sobrinas, sobrinos y muchos otros parientes lejanos. Carlos fue precedido en la muerte por sus padres, su hermano Luis Alonso y su hermana Rosa Miriam. La visitación o velorio y los servicios fúnebres se llevarán a cabo el martes 25 de agosto de 2020. Debido a las restricciones de COVID-19, la asistencia será solo para la familia y algunos invitados.
