Gloria Scherbel

Our dearest mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Gloria Scherbel died Thursday morning May 15, 2014 peacefully at home. She was born April 19, 1930 in Payson, Utah to Beth Depew and George Washington Strong. She was married to Jack F. Scherbel on August 3, 1956. She was preceded in death by her father, mother and her husband. She is survived by her sister, Linda Lundell, Payson Utah and her four children, Susan (Tom Flynn) Scherbel, Hancock Point, Maine; Jill (Tim) Greenwood, West Jordan, Utah; Jack (Lori) Scherbel, Ogden, Utah; and Paula Roberts, Tallahassee Florida. She has 15 grandchildren. The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to those who have served Gloria throughout her life but especially to those who have served her in the past few months. Funeral services will be held at the Chase Lane Ward, 1125 North 400 West, in Centerville, Utah on May 20th at 11:00 AM. There will not be a viewing. While attending Stevens-Henager College, she met Jack Scherbel. They were married in 1956. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. Jack worked for the FAA which took their family across the United States. Later in their marriage, Jack retired from the FAA and worked as an independent contractor which put them back on the road again living in several different locations. They lived in Salt Lake City, UT to Yucca Valley, CA to Temecula, CA (where she hoped to finally settle down and retire). After Jack passed away in 2002, Gloria moved back to Utah to be close to her family. Gloria was a wonderful mother, homemaker, and a gourmet cook. Her favorite activity was to entertain family, friends, and guests. She was able to visit many places of interest across America from Washington DC to Honolulu, HI. Later in her life, the only thing she ever wanted for her birthday was to play Trivial Pursuit with her children. Even on her last birthday, she enjoyed a fun game of Trivial Pursuit; she was still answering the questions decisively; she was amazing. She always won because she was well read and very knowledgeable about boxing, literature, and cinema. Whenever a boxing question came up, she knew the answer to it. Gloria did most of the driving and Jack did the navigating. She liked to drive fast and somehow she avoided getting tickets. Even during her last days, she was giving advice to her son-in-law who has taken over her éclair making tasks. She enjoyed watching cooking shows as long as she agreed with the cook. Gloria's life was full of service to others especially to her family. Mother/Grandmother, we love you and we miss you!!!
