Carol Anderson Norman

Carol entered this life on May 21 1942 as the first child of Lorenzo and Hazel Anderson in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. As the oldest daughter she was often called upon to be a second mother to her brothers and sisters and in return they loved her dearly. It was Carol that took them to Primary and helped nurture their spiritual growth. They love her, revere her, and honor her name for her willingness to do things that were beyond her years. Music loved Carol and Carol showered it with undying attention. A talented pianist, she often accompanied choir numbers and even played the organ for sacrament meeting as a teenager. At Fresno High School she was a member of the Choraleers. One of her dearest gifts was a beautiful piano given to her by her daddy when she was just seven years old. During her final days she enjoyed listening to that piano as it made the journey to Stansbury Park, Utah and was only a few feet from her room. After meeting a handsome young man in Fresno, California she married Robert J. Norman on September 6, 1963 in the Los Angeles temple. She was loved by her husband and they had many wonderful years together. One of Dad’s most treasured memories is the way she greeted him when he came home from work or from a meeting. She always welcomed him home with a smile and was always happy. After earning her bachelor’s degree in Education from Fresno State College (later Fresno State University) Carol taught both kindergarten in Fresno and first grade in Blackfoot, Idaho. She loved to teach and work with young children and they responded to her love. As an adult, serving in the Primary was one of her favorite church callings. Carol also had a talent with her needles and thread, she loved to cross stitch and sew. She especially loved to cross stitch Christmas items, many of which hung on her children’s walls as a reminder of their mother and her extraordinary ability to create beauty. Her talents also extended to the practical - she would often sew her own clothes and some of her children’s clothes. The most wonderful thing of all was to watch her with her grandchildren. She loved all the time she spent with them. She loved playing with them. She loved listening to them. She was happiest when they were around. Many people loved to sit and talk with her and partake of her goodness and wisdom. She had an understanding heart that endeared her to many. Sadly, Alzheimer’s diminished the joy of the last ten years of her life and was the cause of her eventual death. This awful disease robbed her loved ones of Carol’s warm smiles and spontaneous laugh. Sometimes she would vibrate into view for a few seconds then would fall back into her fog. Those moments were treasured and endlessly retold, and we were grateful that, on occasion, we saw her as we remember her. Carol Anderson Norman, aged 73, passed away Jan 10th 2016, in Stansbury Park, Utah at the home of her daughter Kathryn where she spent the last six months of her life. Kathryn kindly offered to give her dad a break. He continued to take care of her needs several times a week. Her husband tenderly cared for her on his own for ten years with the help of a wonderful ward and family. She will be greatly missed. Thank you to all of the angels who aided in her care with such love and concern through these last difficult years and for the service rendered to both Carol and Bob over the time they lived in the Highland Stake Third Ward. It was very tender and touched Bob deeply. Carol is survived by her husband, Robert J. Norman, 6 children - Craig, Steven, David, Marianne, Kathryn and Julie; 35 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren with 1 soon to be born that will have the good fortune of loving her before starting his earthly journey. Carol’s funeral will be held Saturday January 16, 2016 at the South Jordan Highland Stake (10227 South 4000 West South Jordan, Utah). Visiting with family and friends will be 9:30 AM - 10:45 AM and the funeral begins at 11:00 AM. Internment is at Larkin Sunset Gardens in Sandy, Utah. Flowers can be dropped off at the stake center listed above, between 8:30 AM -9:30 AM to be included in the service.
