Edith Marza

Edith Marza Clavijo was born on December 20, 1935 to Isidoro Marza Aramayo and Eulalia Clavjio Ferreira in Oruro, Bolivia. She passed away on January 13, 2024 at 88 years old. She suffered a long battle with Alzheimer’s, but ultimately, it was her heart that gave out. Edith grew up in the Altiplano of Oruro, Bolivia. She had fond memories from her childhood and growing up with her siblings. She loved spending summer breaks with her parents in the mining towns where her father worked most of the year. She was very close to her family. Edith was known for her incredible homemaking skills. We all remember her amazing ability to make a delicious meal out of any ingredient she could find in the refrigerator or cupboard. No one ever left her home hungry and anyone who ate at her home wanted to go back and eat her savory meals. Even her father said she cooked better than her own mother. When Edith was around 12 years old, she had to leave school to cook and clean for her older brothers, while their mother took care of her father who fell ill with rheumatoid arthritis. Edith loved cooking for missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and they loved her meals. Many lauded her cooking skills, saying her meals were better than their mothers’. Although Edith’s formal education ended early, she loved learning. She was an avid reader and participated in classes through adult education and church. Other than cooking, she was a gifted seamstress, knitter, crocheter and baker, all these skills landed her a job as a homemaking teacher at a middle school in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Edith was humble and never sought to be the center of attention, she also had a fun mischievous side and was strong-willed. At 28, she married Hector Barrera Villarroel; they had four children together, Rene, Deysi, Edwin and Roxana. While Edith cared for her children, she also ran a small store and bakery out of their home to earn extra money to help support the family. She was very industrious and made a little go a long way. When missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints first came to her home in 1984, she wanted her children to meet them and learn about the church. Edith and her four children all chose to be baptized. In 2000, when Edith was 65 years old, she migrated to the US to be with her daughter Deysi and sons, Rene and Edwin. She loved her country and missed her daughter Roxana. Nonetheless, she pushed forward going to English classes and working. We all loved watching her interact with her grandchildren, trying so hard to speak English, but also wanting to teach them Spanish. Her grandchildren have fond memories of playing and dancing with her and of course, eating her food. Edith was very close to her daughter Deysi. They were more than mother and daughter; they were best friends and confidants. The two always took care of each other. After Edith was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease Deysi was her primary caretaker. Last year, Edith’s youngest daughter Roxana had a special opportunity to come to the US and be with her mother and sister for three months. This was a blessing for all. Edith is survived by her brother Jose Marza (Rosario); her children Rene (Christina), Deysi, Edwin (Julie), and Roxana (Jose Luis); grandchildren Rhio (Natalie), Aaron, Kai, Jair, Kaden, Hannah, Sophia and Suyana. And many other beloved extended family members and friends. Edith was preceded by her father Isidoro Marza Aramayo and mother Eulalia Clavijo Ferreira; her sister Irene and her brothers Daniel and Julio. Mami thank you for giving us so much. Your spirit will live on in each of us. A memorial service will be held on January 27, 2024 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 4080 W 12600 S, Riverton, UT at 10:00 am. Tenía buenos recuerdos de su infancia creciendo junto con sus hermanos. Nadie salía nunca de su casa con hambre y cualquiera que comía en su casa quería volver y comer sus sabrosas comidas. Incluso su padre le decía que cocinaba mejor que su propia madre. Cuando Edith tenía alrededor de 12 años, tuvo que dejar la escuela para ayudar en la casa y hacerse cargo de sus hermanos mayores, mientras su madre cuidaba de su padre, que se enfermó con artritis reumatoide. A Edith le encantaba cocinar para los misioneros de la Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días y a ellos les encantaban comer lo que cocinaba. Era una ávida lectora y participó en clases de educación para adultos y de la iglesia. Además de cocinar, era una talentosa costurera, tejedora y pastelera; todas estas habilidades le ayudaron a tener un trabajo como profesora de Labores Domésticas en una escuela secundaria en Cochabamba, Bolivia. Edith era humilde y nunca buscó ser el centro de atención, también tenía un lado divertido y travieso y tenía una gran tenacidad. A los 28 años se casó con Héctor Barrera Villarroel; tuvieron cuatro hijos juntos, René, Deysi, Edwin y Roxana. Mientras Edith cuidaba a sus hijos, también tenía una pequeña tienda y una panadería en su casa para ganar dinero extra y ayudar con las finanzas de la familia. Ella era muy trabajadora y tenía una gran habilidad de hacer durar las cosas. Cuando los misioneros de la Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días llegaron por primera vez a su casa en 1984, ella quiso que sus hijos conocieran y aprendieran del Evangelio. Como resultado, Edith y sus cuatro hijos decidieron bautizarse. En el año 2000, cuando Edith tenía 65 años, emigró a los Estados Unidos para estar con su hija Deysi y sus hijos René y Edwin. Amaba a su país y extrañaba a su hija Roxana. No obstante, siguió adelante yendo a clases de inglés y trabajando. A todos nos encantó verla pasar el tiempo con sus nietos, esforzándose tanto por hablar inglés, pero también queriendo enseñarles español. Sus nietos tienen buenos recuerdos de cuando jugaban y bailaban con ella y, por supuesto, de disfrutar su comida. Edith era muy unida a su hija Deysi. Eran más que madre e hija; eran mejores amigas y confidentes. Los dos siempre se cuidaron la una a la otra. Después de que a Edith le diagnosticaran la enfermedad de Alzheimer, Deysi fue su principal cuidadora. El año pasado, Roxana, la hija menor de Edith, tuvo la oportunidad especial de venir a Utah y pasar un tiempo con su madre y su hermana durante tres meses. Esta fue una bendición para todos. A Edith le sobreviven su hermano José Marza (Rosario); sus hijos René (Cristina), Deysi, Edwin (Julie) y Roxana (José Luis); nietos Rhio (Natalie), Aaron, Kai, Jair, Kaden, Hannah, Sophia y Suyana. Además de muchos otros queridos familiares y amigos. Edith fue precedida por su padre Isidoro Marza Aramayo y su madre Eulalia Clavijo Ferreira; su hermana Irene y sus hermanos Daniel y Julio.
