Julia Zoe Goulding Maes

Julia Zoe Goulding Maes, known to her friends as Zoe, passed away on September 6, 2026, in Sandy, Utah at the age of 87. Zoe was born in Henrieville, Utah on June 10, 1939. She grew up in Provo and Orem, Utah and Fontana, California, and graduated from Fontana High School. She later moved with her parents to Santa Fe, New Mexico where she met Ernie Maes. Zoe married Ernie on April 25, 1959, at Fort Benning Georgia. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. During Ernie’s service in the Army, Zoe traveled to Germany with baby Bobby as Ernie served during the Berlin Wall crisis. Their daughter Lori was born in Germany during this time. After Ernie completed his military service, they settled in Albuquerque, New Mexico where they lived for 16 years. Children Rick and Monica were born in Albuquerque. They later moved to Sandy, Utah. After retirement, Zoe and Ernie lived in Santa Clara, Bloomington Hills, and Pleasant Grove, Utah. Over the years, Zoe worked at the University of Albuquerque, the Tumor Registry at the University of New Mexico and Jordan Credit Union. Zoe was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. After retirement, she and Ernie continued serving others. They served as ordinance workers at the Washington DC Temple, as missionaries at the St. George Visitors Center Mission and the Uruguay Montevideo West Mission and as ordinance workers at the Guatemala Quetzaltenango Temple. Zoe was a friend to all. Growing up we always seemed to have other teenagers and cousins in our home. She had a way of making people feel welcome, and our home was often a gathering place for family and friends. She was a great cook, and we especially enjoyed the treats she baked at Christmastime. Her New Mexican meals consisting of beans, chile, tortillas and tamales became family gathering staples. She was always knitting, crocheting or quilting and many of us treasure the quilts and afghans she made for the births of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Zoe was a renowned game player. Get a game going and she was always the quickest and wittiest at the table. Her sense of humor, quick mind, and competitive spirit made playing games with Mom something we will always remember. Zoe was preceded in death by her father and mother, James Orlo Goulding and Fawn Hancock, and her eight siblings. She is survived by her husband Ernie, children Bob (Marti), Lori Widdison (Willie), Rick, Monica Tullis (Shaun), 14 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. We wish to thank the staff at Crescent Senior Living and Canyon Home Care and Hospice for the friendship, love and compassionate service they provided to Zoe and our family. Zoe’s love of family, her generosity, her sense of humor, and the warmth she brought into the lives of those around her will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.\ A viewing will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM at the LDS chapel located at 89 East 11000 South, Sandy, Utah, followed by funeral services starting at 11:00 AM.
