Stephen Bruce Gowen

Stephen Bruce Gowen was born March 24, 1948 in Palo Alto, California to Forrest and Velda Gowen. He passed away surrounded by his family in Salt Lake City on August 23, 2018. Bruce served as a missionary from 1967-1969, For The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Southern States mission. After his mission, Bruce attended BYU where he met his sweetheart, Karen Jones. Shortly thereafter they were married in the Oakland, California Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on August 13, 1970. While in the midst of providing for his large family, Bruce went on to complete his Bachelor’s degree in psychology and receive his MBA from the University of Phoenix. He loved people. He loved helping people and solving problems, a skill he used for many years in his career in Business Management. Bruce loved the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the scriptures, especially the Book of Mormon. He loved singing hymns and often participated in church choirs whenever his schedule allowed. His love his Savior showed in all aspects of his life and that love spread throughout his family. He loved his large growing family, all of whom looked up to him and his wonderful example of how a man should be. He was strong, tender hearted, compassionate, wise and courageous. He was an example of love and sacrifice. In the later years of his life, he enjoyed traveling with his wife Karen. They spent three years living in Guatemala and Mexico where they made many dear friends. He is survived by his wife Karen and children Jay (Shauna), Allie Maldonado (J.C.), Joseph (Natalie), Don (Lauren), Billy (Rob), Liesel Jones (Joseph), Nathan (Brenda), Sean (Erin), Travis (Jessica), Forrest, and 20 grandchildren. He is preceded by his parents and younger brother Ron Gowen. The Funeral Service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints building located at 1510 W. Parliament Ave. on Friday August 31 at 12:00 pm. There will be a viewing before the service from 11 am- 11:30 am. A huge thank you to all the medical staff at the U of U Hospital, LDS Hospital and St. Joseph’s Villa for the great care they provided Bruce and our family over the past few months. We have seen many miracles, blessings and tender mercies and are so grateful for each one.
