Mele Kafo'atu Tafuna Lutui
September 17, 1934 - December 11, 2016
Service. This is one word that eloquently sums up the existence of such a beautiful wife, devoted mother, and vivacious grandmother. Mele Kafo’atu Tafuna Lutui’s mortal life came to its peaceful conclusion on Sunday, December 11, 2016 in her Salt Lake City, Utah home with her husband by her side. Her energy was captivating, her smile was infectious, and her laughter was contagious as she was naturally able to brighten anyone’s day. While we may mourn her death, we find joy and comfort in celebrating her life. Mele Kafo’atu Tafuna Lutui was born September 17, 1934 in Uiha, Ha’apai, Tonga to her loving parents Fehoko Vavasa Tafuna and Ilaise Ma’ukavaonga ‘Ahotaeiloa Tafuna. She married the love of her life, Vaikalafi Lutui from Matahau, Tonga in 1959 and they were later sealed in the Hamilton, New Zealand temple on June 16, 1962. Vaikalafi and Mele together had 11 children and who she was also survived by which includes, Samisoni (Sune Vehikite), Edith (Uaine Fa), Whitikei (Siutiti Mahina), Mele Kafo’atu (Avalisi Bloomfield), Lusa (Mohulamu Kivalu), Melini (Tipasa Tukuafu), Neomai (Siliveinusi Niu), Vaikalafi (Ilaisa’ane Vimahi), Tuipulotu (Saia Langi), Isikeli (Alexandrina Hopoate), Seisela (Sione Koloamatangi), 66 grandchildren, and 42 great grandchildren. She loved her family and devoted her entire life to them. Her final moments on this Earth were spent sending and welcoming grandchildren home from LDS missions, serving her husband, and teaching her children to be moved & inspired by love. Her legacy lives on in and through her family. If there is anything she would have wanted anyone to remember her by, it was that their sole role and purpose in this temporal life is to build up the Kingdom of God on Earth. Might we always look to her as we continue to sojourn here in this life and find our own lives by losing it in service, something she was able to exemplify. Thank you for the love, the laughs and the lessons we will always cherish forever in our hearts. May you rest in the loving arms of our maker, even Heavenly Father. Until we meet again… Ofa lahi atu!!
