Judith Carole Smith

Judy passed away peacefully on July 31, 2024 in Holladay Utah with her husband at her side. Judy was born in 1931, in Monroe Michigan near the shores of Lake Eerie to James C. and Mary Cassada. She graduated from Monroe High school and attended the University of Colorado, Boulder, where she affiliated with Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, studied journalism, and met her future husband, Cecil W. (Bill) Smith. They were married in Denver Co in 1954. With Bill’s early career they lived in ME, NJ, CO, and WY before settling in Salt Lake City in 1960. She participated in many volunteer activities including Girl Scouts, League of Women Voters, and women’s organizations of Wasatch Presbyterian Church (WOW). She served as a Sunday School teacher, choir member, and Deacon of Wasatch Presbyterian and was proud to become a Docent at the Natural History Museum of Utah. Her professional career began with the Utah Girl Scout Council, and she retired from the Utah Department of Health. Judy was an outdoor enthusiast year-round. With Bill and their three daughters, she participated in adventures with the Wasatch Mountain Club as well as snowshoeing, skiing, hiking, camping, 4-wheeling, and many hours viewing the beauty of the stars and excitement of meteor showers. Judy and Bill also loved to travel and together explored Alaska, Hawaii, most of the continental U.S. states, Canada, Mexico, and the British Isles. Of her many talents, Judy was an excellent seamstress. She loved a good murder mystery and enjoyed learning about diverse cultures, archeology, and was a big fan of Carl Sagan’s “Cosmos”. Judy is survived by her sister Ann Davis (Floyd), husband Bill Smith, daughters Sue Heavenrich (Lou), Laura Peterson (Lloyd), Kathryn Sonzini (Mike), grandchildren Coulter, Toby, Skylar, Kim, and four great grandchildren. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation and gratitude for the loving care and compassion Judy received at Spring Gardens Holladay Memory Care, as well as Bristol Hospice during her final months of life. You are amazing angels. A service celebrating her life will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday Aug 17, at Wasatch Presbyterian Church, 1626 SO 1700 E, SLC.
