Larry Don Livingston

Larry Don Livingston, passed from this life peacefully at his Avenues home on January 4th, 2024 at the age of 84. He was surrounded by people who loved him. He was born on March 13, 1941, to Wendell Anderson Livingston and Viola Pearl Neilson. Larry had a wonderful childhood growing up in Holladay, Salt Lake City, Utah. When he was 10 years old, his father passed away. From then on, he was raised by his maternal grandfather, Hyrum Neilson, his mother, and his aunt Goldie (Estella Neilson). Larry graduated from Olympus high school. Larry served a 2 year mission in France for the LDS church. Larry's love of beautiful things was amplified by personal trips to Europe thereafter. Larry was a member of the United States Army. He attended the University of Washington and the University of Utah. He talked frequently and fondly of his time working for the city council. Larry brought inspiration and beauty into the two historic homes he owned in the avenues. This is where Larry’s legacy and purpose blossomed as he tended to a world of intentional care and craftsmanship between the neighboring homes. In Larry’s world, everyone was accepted without judgment and welcomed into an environment where there was freedom to dream and rest amongst beauty. He rarely missed an opportunity to feed the squirrels and tinker away at odd jobs, reflecting his deep appreciation for the small and quiet moments that make up a life. In a world that can seem increasingly unforgiving, unaffordable and un-inclusive, Larry did what few have been brave enough to do. Larry created beauty as an act of defiance. He shared with everyone, and made sure all felt safe to express themselves fully. If times were hard, he was known to forgive rent for months at a time and allow true healing to extend into the fabric of the avenue's homes. Witnessing his last moments inside of his home, his life’s work, was a stunning and poetic end to such a singular force of nature. We have been forever changed and ultimately saved by the kindness of our dear friend, Larry Don Livingston. Larry is survived by his sister, Karen (Livingston) Cannon and is preceded in death by his parents, brother, W.Dick Livingston, his brother who died as a baby and his sister, Nancy Lee Law.
