Scott Kurtis Pettit

Scott Kurtis Pettit passed away on March 9, 2026, surrounded by his loving family and friends. Scott was born on January 2, 1979, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to David John Pettit and Sharae Pettit. Growing up, Scott developed many interests, including a love of history, participating in plays, singing in several choirs, performing with a youth group around the country, and being on the ballroom dance team at Alta High School. He graduated from Alta High School in 1997. After high school, he faithfully served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Germany. Following his mission, Scott attended the University of North Texas, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in emergency management. During his time in Texas, Scott met the love of his life, Tracy Pettit. Scott was serving as the secretary in the Residence Hall Association when he met Tracy. They were married in June 2004 and built a life filled with love and devotion. Scott built a successful career working as an HR Manager and later as a Regional Safety Manager. In 2014, Scott and Tracy were blessed through the miracle of adoption when they welcomed their son, Edwin Pettit, into their family. Later in life, Scott realized he had not yet found his true passion. Determined to follow his calling, he returned to school and graduated from Westminster in 2012 with a master’s degree in secondary education and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Western Governor’s University. After graduating, Scott began working at Summit Academy, where he served in many roles, including that of a teacher, assistant principal, debate coach, director of safety, director of transportation, bus driver, director of facilities, grant writer and covid specialist. Scott received several awards including District Administrator of the year, District Coach of the year, 2024 Safety Hero, Outstanding Teacher & Debate Coach Award, and Business Employee of the Quarter in 2024. He truly left a lasting impact on his co-workers and students, and everyone he met. Scott was the kind of person who would give the shirt off his back to help someone in need. He had a remarkable gift for connecting with others without judgment, offering kindness, compassion, and understanding to everyone he met. Scott believed deeply in people and in second chances. He truly embodied charity—the pure love of Christ. A lifelong historian at heart, Scott loved learning about history and sharing that knowledge with others. Scott also had a great sense of humor. He was often funny and sometimes sarcastic. Above all, he had a way of making people smile. Scott served in many church callings throughout his life, always giving of his time and talents with quiet devotion. He served as Webelos Scout leader, Young Men counselor at both the ward and stake levels, Bishopric financial and membership clerk, Elders Quorum President, and, most recently, second counselor in the bishopric. While he was grateful for every opportunity to serve, his favorite calling was Primary pianist. Scott loved music, and he found special joy in playing the piano for children, a role that perfectly reflected his gentle spirit and love for others. Scott was first diagnosed with cancer in September of 2024. He courageously fought and won his first battle. Sadly, the cancer later returned. Though he lost the physical battle, he won the spiritual one. We take comfort in knowing he has been joyfully reunited with our Heavenly Father, our Savior, and with family members, friends, and beloved pets who have gone before him. Scott was preceded in death by his grandparents, Sharon Hatch, Seth Pettit & Neva Pettit. He is survived by his beloved wife, Tracy Pettit; his son, Edwin Pettit; his beloved pets, Stella and Wendell; his parents, David and Sharae Pettit; his siblings Marshall Pettit (Shelbi), Brady Pettit (Shantel), Brett Pettit (Jennifer), and Makaylee Racker (Joel); along with many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. All family members, friends, current and former students, and all who were touched by Scott’s life are warmly invited to attend the viewings and funeral services.
